Associated Organization: Beacon of Hope Uganda

Beacon of Hope Uganda designs and conducts programs which contribute to the welfare and social productivity of disadvantaged individuals and communities with an emphasis on children and youth. BoHU addresses some of the most pervasive problems in rural Uganda, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, hunger, education, poverty, access to clean drinking water, and orphaned children. In addition, it focusses on empowering the youth of Uganda empowering them with different skills and leadership training.

BoHU is founded on the principles that our shared values and commonalities as human beings are more important than our individual differences. We therefore operate on a non-political, non-denominational, and non-sectarian basis, welcoming all world citizens to contribute to our work and every Ugandan in need.

BoHU reaches out to the furthest and most abandoned communities in the rural areas of Uganda including its islands. Amongst these are the Bevuma islands which are hard to reach and under –  served by the government and Ugandan NGO’s. Through educating Ugandans on diseases awareness & prevention, and fostering the creation of self sustaining projects run by the local community, BoHU aims to achieve its mission.

A number of short term and long term goals have been established so far and now we are in position to attract volunteers for short-term (7 days to 2 months) and long-term volunteers (3 months to 6 months).

Mission: Helping people to help themselves out of poverty and create (financial) independence amongst our beneficiaries through effective community education and the development of projects, creating a self-supporting, self-sustaining community in a rapidly changing world.

Vision: Providing resources  to achieve sustainable development in under-resourced areas and for BoHU to become a self-sustaining non-government organization in its efforts in Uganda.

BoHU is a movement dedicated to supporting quality sustainable development in targeted under-resourced communities, with programs in Uganda.

We are committed to helping individuals fulfill their potential and play meaningful roles in shaping their communities.

The focus of our programs is on providing resources for sustainable development in under-resourced communities. In order to uplift the youngest of our society however, it is often necessary to first assist adults and overall communities in which they live. Past and/or ongoing projects conducted in the general community include feeding the destitute, outreach, counseling, and assistance to people living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses which affect their health, life expectancy as well as their social and economical position in society and counseling. Other programs BoHu runs are focusing on giving immediate assistance to individuals who have been raped or defiled and the building of village wells, schools and establishment of health centers. Furthermore BoHu offers assistance with women’s craft groups, and ongoing assistance with an organic community garden and youth skills training enhancing their development, social and economical opportunities.

Community Outreaches & Improvement of Living Standards:

Volunteer on Rural Health Projects:

BoHU reaches out to the rural villages with a team of volunteers for 2-5 days a week to organize health workshops. BoHU aims to fight diseases by educating the communities in and around Mukono district about awareness and prevention. Drawing from the education seminars and resources from the Uganda Ministry of Health training programs, this objective is achieved through the exchange of knowledge in seminars, working together in organized camps, and Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) programs. Topics discussed in the seminars range from Malaria control, family planning, to HIV/AIDS and Epilepsy.

Volunteer within Community Sanitation Projects:

The BoHU team engages into programs and projects which improve the sanitation of  rural people. This includes clearing of drinking wells, building of dry racks and the digging of latrines as well as education on a healthy life style.. Join the team and help in improving the poor conditions of sanitation in Uganda’s rural villages.

Material Support:

BoHU provides material support to those in the Mukono District who are unable to and care for themselves. This may include the elderly, orphans, the disabled, prisoners, and those living ith or affect by HIV and AIDS

This support may include:

Home, Prison, or School Visits;

Supplying sanitary kits to village school girls;

The delivery of food supplies from development programs to orphans;

Sporting events for orphans to improve the social aspect;

Providing school supplies to schools per term for orphans;

Elderly Support Programs include heling them with clothes washing, visitation, and the construction of sanitation areas including kitchens and areas where clothes can easily dry.

 We supply clothing, sanitation supplies, and provide counseling to  prisoners.

Teach Volunteer and Internship Opportunities:

The main focus is providing education to hundreds of children in poor communities in Uganda. Village schools provide English, Math, health lessons to children aged 3yrs-12yrs. The schools provide not only education but also opportunities for sports and play, health talks, a nutrition center and a meeting place for the community.

With our volunteer program we allow you to discover the wonders of Uganda, while doing meaningful and rewarding community work. This is a great opportunity to explore life in rural Uganda as well as to visit rural schools, live and work amongst the locals and realize you can make a difference.

Teaching experience is not required. You can begin as a teaching assistant and then work in small groups with children in need of extra attention. The objective of this program is to contribute to the academic development of the school and the children in order to provide the best opportunity for the orphans to receive quality education. Volunteers support the local teachers; encourage students to learn and play and instill pride in their schooling.

Develop a poor community in Uganda/ Building Program:

You will have the opportunity to try different roles and projects, dependent on your interests and skills. These volunteer opportunities do not require specialized skills (although these would be an advantage!).  We accept volunteers for both short and long-term placements, all year round. Volunteers certainly gain an amazing life experience from their participation in our building program. On arrival, most volunteers see all the projects before selecting the tasks that fit them best.

Tell us about your educational background, your skills and your interest as well as what you expect in terms of comfort and hosting.  Together we can find a suitable placement for you! All information you need before coming to Uganda can be provided to you and while on your placement you can count on our support
